Luther Strange is the incumbent for the Senate seat. Strange was appointed in February when Jeff Sessions was named Attorney General by President Trump. Strange was appointed to the seat by former Governor Bentley who at the time was the focus of an investigation of the then governor.
Rumors surrounded the appointment, many believing it was used by the Governor to end the investigation
Strange has been endorsed by the NRA, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and President Trump.
Roy Moore, the embattled former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice is known for his religious views and conservatism. He has been removed from the court two times—once in 2003 after he refused to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments from court grounds, and once in 2016 for refusing to abide by the decision to legalize gay marriage across the country.
He has since resigned from the position in order to seek the Senate seat.
Moore lost bids for the Republican ticket for Alabama governor in 2006 and 2010.
The runoff will be September 26.
