AUBURN, Ala. (EETV)- Auburn University's Campus Safety and Security office is reminding students and staff members of tips to keep your belongings safe during the Christmas Holiday:
On or Off Campus
- Do not change your voice mail message or post social media messages that you are out of town. Post your travel pictures when you’re back home so you don’t make yourself a target of theft.
- Lock all doors and windows, at home or in your office, and close blinds and curtains when you leave.
- Take your computer with you. If you are unable to do this, make sure it is password protected and locked down if possible. Make sure passwords are kept in a secure location.
- Take your valuables with you or lock them in a safe place. Avoid leaving documents accessible that may contain personal information, especially credit card and bank statements.
- Keep a list of serial numbers and descriptions of your valuables and equipment, and take it with you if going out of town.
- Always lock your vehicle and don’t leave valuables within view.
- Unplug nonessential electrical appliances before you leave.
- Do not give rides to strangers. If someone you don’t know needs assistance, call Auburn Police Division at 334-501-3100, option 1.
- Report emergencies by dialing 911. Report any unauthorized people or suspicious activity to Auburn Police Division immediately by dialing 334-501-3100, option 1.
On Campus
- Take personal valuables with you, including art, music players, or other items that might draw attention.
- Place university keys in a safe and secure place.
- Turn off anything that might create a hazard if there is a power disruption.
- Lock your office door and windows. If doors or windows do not lock properly, report it to Facilities immediately (334-844-4357).
- If on campus during the break, do not prop doors or allow others to tailgate into buildings with you.
Off Campus
- Consider setting up a timer to turn your lights in your residence on during the evening. Multiple timers set to different times are even better. Radios can also be left on or placed on a timer.
- If possible, have someone stay at your residence while you’re away, or at least have them check on it every few days. Have someone collect your mail and newspaper, or put them on hold.
- Get repairs made to any doors or windows that do not lock properly before you leave.
- If you have a bicycle, store it inside or take it with you.
- If you plan on leaving your vehicle, have someone move it every few days to make it appear that someone is home.
- Coordinate your plans with your roommate to make sure your residence is secured throughout the break.
