AUBURN, Ala. (EETV)- Communities across the world are planning celebrations Monday to honor the life of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Many people who are off school or work Monday are participating in community service events, which have become a popular way to give back and honor King's legacy.
For those in the Auburn area looking to give back, here are some local volunteer opportunities:
The Auburn University Black Student Union and the Auburn University Alternative Student Breaks organization will be partnering to host a community service trip to Selma on Monday.
The cost is $20 which includes meals, travel and even an event t-shirt. Interested students can register on AU Involve.
The City of Montgomery and Hands On River Region are partnering to host their annual MLK Day of Service Monday in the Highland Gardens area. The event will start at 9:00 a.m. at the Highland Gardens Community Center located at 2805 Willena Avenue Montgomery, AL 36107.
Projects will include ground maintenance at the Highland Gardens Community Center, smoke detector installation at local homes, community garden work and packaging hygiene kits for homeless residents.
