Auburn, Ala. (EETV)- Bridging the gap between students and the Student Government Association (SGA) senate is one of Schyler Burney's initiatives if she is elected as SGA Vice President. Burney is a Junior from Decatur, Alabama, currently majoring in Economics in the College of Liberal Arts. She says that by getting students familiar with their senators from their colleges then these will make for a better Auburn Experience.
“[Students] need to be able to understand the role that their senator serves on campus but also the role that their senator serves for them within their college and their Auburn experience.”
Burney has been involved with SGA for 3 years. She has been apart of the Lobby Board under External Affairs and an SGA Senator for the College of Liberal Arts. Through being involved with these organizations she has gained diverse perspectives and encompassed a wide variety of skills and careers that Auburn has to offer.
Outside of the Student Government Association, Burney is involved in a Panhellenic Sorority. By doing this she feels she has made some beneficial relationships in the organization.
"Coming to Auburn and finding that foundation within a group of people was a nice way to set the tone for my time here."
Burney wants to revaluate the way that SGA represents Auburn's campus. "Setting the tone right from the beginning and getting everyone on the same page will allow us to have a more efficient year.”
Part of getting everyone on the same page includes inviting more students in meetings to hear their opinions and points of view to see how SGA can better serve the Auburn community.
"Being able to invite other student government associations to appoint members to come in and serve as non-voting members but brings their opinions to the table and have those conversations in the room."
Burney's overall theme for her campaign is "Reaching for the Schy."
"In the coming term, I do not want to see Senate settle, or become complacent with routine, but rather seek out new projects and become the best that it can possibly be."
