AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) What seems to be an almost common occurrence, school shootings have become a very real threat. Last week was a grim reminder that we need a system to protect students and faculty to these threats.
On February 14, a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School opened fire on students and teachers, killing 17 people. Though many people were killed, many more could've been killed if the school didn't react the way it did. The school's active shooter procedure saved many lives that day but this brings up the question about what Auburn University would do under these circumstances.
Auburn University has a series of procedures and a multi-faceted team that monitors and assesses security threats around the clock. If they are ever given any information regarding potential on-campus threats the security department will immediately begin investigating it, all threats are made the top priority in the department.
Even with all this, the most important asset that the security team has is you. Chance Corbett, the interim executive director of campus security, said that if you ever see something, say something and email campus security at Campussafety@auburn.edu or to call the police if it seems like an immediate threat.
The security department also offers training every fourth Wednesday of the month on how to deal and react with an on-campus shooting. Even with all these procedures, the Auburn campus security team patrols campus day and night protecting students and visitors from what could be very real threats.
