AUBURN, Ala. (EETV)- Auburn University President Steven Leath officially unveiled his new goal Thursday of hiring 500 additional tenure track faculty members by 2022. If achieved, this would result in an over 30 percent increase in Auburn University faculty members.
With the new positions comes potential economic benefits to the city of Auburn and surrounding east Alabama communities.
“Auburn University makes such a huge economic impact on the city of Auburn and surrounding area that obviously it's a very bright day for Auburn, Alabama," said Auburn Mayor Bill Ham.
Ham also emphasized the city of Auburn’s good working relationship with current and former Auburn University leadership and discussed some of the ways the City partners with the University.
“Going forward with the expansion he mentioned of the research park, economic development opportunities," said Ham, "we do so many things together now that people may not understand."
Local business leaders are also optimistic of Leath’s new vision for Auburn University and look forward to working with him in the years ahead.
“We’re thrilled with Dr. Leath’s vision and commitment to making Auburn an impactful, world-class university,” stated Auburn Chamber of Commerce President Lolly Steiner. “The prosperity of Auburn University and the continued growth of outreach programs and public-private partnerships mean continued prosperity of the Auburn business community.”
In addition to the hiring plan, Leath also announced increased development of the Auburn Research Park and a focus on more external partnerships.
