Montgomery, Ala. - In a press release from the Office of the Governor, Governor Kay Ivey commented on the response and effects of Tropical Storm Gordon.
On Wednesday morning, Gordon was downgraded to a tropical depression as Alabama continues to see heavy rainfall as the storm moves across the south. Gordon was a tropical storm when it made landfall near the Alabama and Mississippi borders with Alabama receiving a majority of the storm’s effects.
The storm was originally expected to intensify to a Category 1 hurricane.
“I’m grateful to our state’s first responders and emergency managers for all of their efforts leading up to Tropical Storm Gordon coming ashore. The preparation, coordination and cooperation by citizens during this storm greatly minimized the impact across our state,” said Ivey. “There are still significant power outages in south Alabama and power crews are working very hard to get electric service restored. If you are in the affected areas, please be aware of your surroundings and the crews that are out working to get utilities restored. I have also directed Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Hastings to travel to the Mobile area to tour the coast and to meet with local officials to evaluate the ongoing needs in the affected areas.
A State Emergency Operations Team coordinating call is further assessing the conditions throughout the days to come.
