Auburn, Ala (EETV)- Despite two strong wins against Washington and Alabama State, LSU defeats Auburn in their SEC home opener 22-21. LSU snaps Auburn’s 13 home-game winning streak, and this is second time LSU defeated in dramatic fashion in the last two years.
It was a tough battle all the way until the end as LSU kicked the game winning field goal with two seconds left. Auburn was able to maintain the lead throughout the game but unable to execute during the fourth quarter by failing on multiple third down conversions and giving LSU time to secure field goal position.
The Auburn Tigers got off to an unproductive start with Jarrett Stidham throwing an interception, his first of two for the game, in the opening drive but was able to secure a 14-10 lead going into half time.
Auburn again held LSU to only a field goal in the third quarter while securing two touchdowns for themselves, but was unable answer back to LSU’s offense during the fourth quarter. Auburn went 3-0 in their final drive as LSU ate 5 minutes off the clock in their game winning drive.
Despite redshirt freshman JaTarvious Whitlow leading the team with 22 attempts and 104 rushing yards, LSU was able to hold Auburn to under 200 yards rushing, a benchmark the team strives to reach every game.
Auburn struggled to contain LSU’s aerial attack with quarterback Joe Burrow throwing for 249 yards. However senior LB Deshaun Davis had his best game of the season with 13 tackles and 1 sack.
Both teams were pretty even in offense production but Auburn’s two turnovers and penalty yards proved too difficult to overcome.The Auburn Tigers racked up 111 penalty yards which gave LSU some lucky breaks, especially on the game winning drive with a holding penalty and a pass interference.
Auburn looks to improve as they face another SEC opponent in the Arkansa Razorbacks next week at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
