Through an NIH-funded clinical trial through the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University’s Veterinary College, people and animals suffering from glioma brain cancer are now undergoing treatment.
According to the press statement released by Auburn, humans and animals are undergoing the same immunotherapy for glioma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer, because dogs and humans development malignant brain tumors at the same rate and with similar biology.
“This clinical trial is highly unusual in that the same treatment is being used in animals and people at the same time,” said Amy Yanke, veterinarian and clinical trial investigator “We are at the forefront of medical treatment.”
The Moonshot Initiative through the Center for Cancer Research of the NIH’s National Cancer Institute funs the $2.6 million, five-ear project.
