AUBURN, Ala. (EETV)- Auburn University's Office of Information Technology will be requiring Duo 2-Factor Authentication for university email and registration starting Monday.
According to OIT, "2-factor authentication is the process of requiring an individual to provide their login credentials and proof of identity via a secondary device, such as a smartphone, before granting access to an online resource."
Auburn University Chief Information Security Officer William Miaoulis says that the new system will provide greater security beyond the current password system.
"The reason for it is quite frankly passwords have gone past their prime," said Miaoulis. "Hackers can crack an eight digit password in literally minutes."
Students can learn more about the new requirement and how to set it up by visiting www.duo.auburn.edu.
