AUBURN, Ala. (EETV)- Former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville announced Saturday that he will be running for the Republican nomination in Alabama's 2020 United States Senate race.
Tuberville announced the run through Twitter writing, "After more than a year of listening to Alabama’s citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step -- I will be a @GOP candidate for US Senate."
Tuberville served as Auburn's head football coach from 1999-2008 where he led the Tigers to an Southeastern Conference championship in 2004.
This is not the first time that Tuberville has toyed with politics, the former coach explored running for Alabama governor in 2018 but decided against formally entering the race.
Tuberville joins Rep. Bradley Byrne in the race for the Republican nomination. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Doug Jones.
