Auburn, Ala. (EETV) โ Another Newton will soon be playing football on the Plains. Caylin Newton announced Friday via Twitter he will be heading to Auburn as a graduate transfer.
Newton comes from Howard, where he won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and as a sophomore, was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year. Before he announced his intention to transfer last October, Newton entered the season as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Since he only played four games at Howard last season, he will have two full years of eligibility left.
While Newton will be eligible to play immediately, if wants to serve as quarterback, he will have to prove himself against Bo Nix as the current starter. Nix started every game last season and was named SEC Freshman of the Year.
With the transfer, Newton will look to follow in his brother's footsteps.
Older brother Cam transferred to Auburn in 2010 where he earned the Heisman trophy and led the Tigers to an undefeated season that ended with a National Championship. Cam then went on to become a star for the Carolina Panthers.
