AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn Women’s Tennis shined Friday, having four singles wins at the Music City Scramble, which is hosted by Vanderbilt.
Against Vanderbilt, Auburn picked up singles wins of four of the six matches.
Selin Ovunc came from behind to secure a three-set win over Emma Kurtz, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2. Georgie Axon also fought back from behind to beat Amanda Meyer 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Yu Chen won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Anessa Lee. Carolyn Anarsi also picked up a win against Anna Ross, who retired after sets of 6-4, 4-5.
After a strong fight, Taylor Russo fell short to Holly Staff, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 ,and Shir Azran lost her first match as a Tiger to Marcella Cruz, 6-3, 6-2.
“We are grateful to the SEC and to our administration for making fall competition possible for us,” Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. “Today our opponents exposed some things we will make a concerted effort to improve. We can and will be better, one day at a time.”
While singles shined on Friday, doubles got off to a slow start and dropped three matches to opponents from Ole Miss. Azran and Ovunc lost 7-5 in a close match against Mine and Fiquet. The teams of Ansari and Russo and Axon and Chen both lost their matches 6-3. Auburn also lost to Tennesssee, despite switching up doubles pairs.
Day two of competition on Saturday will be just singles play. The Tigers will face Tennessee starting at 4 p.m. CT.
