Auburn, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn University is recommending that as many people as possible get a flu shot as soon as they can. The Medical Clinic at Auburn University is offering walk-in flu shot clinics daily during this flu season. Additionally, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 14, flu shots can also be received in Room 2326 of the Harold D. Melton Student Center. Faculty is also encouraged to get their flu shot during their Healthy Tigers visit at the Auburn Employee Pharmacy.
This year, it is more important than ever for as many people as possible to get their flu shot. While the flu vaccination will not protect the recipient from COVID-19, it will lower the risk of the recipient contracting the flu. The prevention of an influenza outbreak during the current COVID-19 pandemic will be crucial in the fight against COVID, as an influenza outbreak would take up already taxed resources needed to fight COVID-19 as well as increase numbers in hospitals already containing COVID-19-infected patients.
The CDC estimates that the flu vaccine prevents millions of influenza illnesses and influenza-estimated medical visits each year. The vaccine has also been shown to reduce the risk of having to seek medical attention for the flu by 40 to 60 percent. This year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping all flu statistics as low as possible is a must for reducing the effects of COVID-19.
