AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - The Tigers' track and field season opened last weekend, and they started off strong. This past weekend the team attended the Bob Pollock Invitational on Clemson University’s campus and took home three event wins and eight other medal performances over the two-day meet.
A notable mention is All-American and Auburn junior Madi Malone who won her second weight throw event in many weeks. She broke her own school record from the 2019 season and now has the national leading toss of 22.20m. Over the two events, she has eight of the top 10 throws in Auburn track and field history.
Other throws that excelled were from sophomore Maura Huwalt and sophomore Kyle Brown. Huwalt won her first collegiate meet in shot put, securing her personal best 15.56m/51-0.75 and a gold medal. Brown was the top collegiate finisher and second overall, also having his personal best of 20.58m/67-6.25.
Alex Spyridonidis, senior transfer from Angelo State, won the men’s heptathlon making him the number four performer in school history with 5,314 points. He had a personal record in shot put and top time or mark in four of the seven events.
In the high jump, Kamiya Dendy won second and teammate Caroline Lawrence won third with season’s best marks. For the men, Dontavious Hill and TJ Funches tied for second.
The top collegiate finisher and second overall for pole vault was James Courson clearing 5.05m/16-6.75.
Making his debut in a Tigers uniform after transferring, Dante Brown was second in the 60m dash. He was the 2020 NAIA National Champion in the event.
