Following the conclusion of their eight-game non-conference season, coach Terri Williams-Flournoy and the rest of the Auburn Tigers traveled to Baton Rouge on Thursday night to face the bayou bengals on the hardwood in their SEC opener. The task proved too tall as the orange and blue suffered a 56-43 loss and dropped to 5-4 on the season.
The final score was not indicative of the entire game, however. Coach Flo’s squad heald and 27-19 lead at thee half due — in large — to the exceptional play of freshmen Romi Levy and Aicha Coulibaly. The duo combined for 16 points and 9 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, they ultimately combined for 20 points and 16 rebounds.
Despite solid play from young talents, the LSU press defense forced Auburn into 24 turnovers which would result in 22 points for the purple and gold, building both momentum and a sound lead in the latter portion of the contest. Auburn did not help its own case, as the squad went a full six minutes without tallying a bucket, leaving the door open for LSU to write its own narrative.
Coach Flo and company will return to the plains to take on UGA on Jan. 3 at Auburn Arena. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. CT with national broadcast available on SEC network.
