AUBURN, ALABAMA (EETV) The Auburn women’s basketball team is on a roll. First year head coach Johnnie Harris has lead her team to a 5-3 start — matching the program’s win total from 2020 in just eight games — and are winners of three straight contests. The early season success is due, in large, to exceptional performances from sophomore guard Aicha Coulibaly, the now-reigning SEC player of the week.
Coulibaly’s receiving of the award comes following her stretch of outstanding play in the Tigers’ victories over Charleston Southern, North Florida and Oklahoma State in which the sophomore averaged 25 points per game; she posted a career-best 27 points against CSU, bringing her season scoring average to 17.1
The six-foot Mali native earned the honors for the first time in her young career as a Tiger and became the first member of the Auburn program to be recognized for the award since Unique Thompson was recognized in Dec. of 2020.
This week’s award was a shared honor between Coulibaly and Missouri’s Aijha Blackwell who posted 20 points in the Tigers’ 2-point loss at the hands of Baylor before fouling out.
Coulibaly and the rest of the Auburn squad will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 12 when the Tigers play host to the Belmont Bruins. Tipoff between the two squads is set for 2:00 p.m. CST on SEC Network.
