AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) – Auburn Men’s Basketball Head Coach Bruce Pearl is officially locked in with the program after signing a long-term contract extension on Friday night.
Auburn Director of Athletics Allen Greene posted a video to twitter relaying the news to Auburn Fans saying, “I got a big surprise for you [Auburn Fans], we locked him up.” As he smiled and laughed, Greene motioned the camera to his left to show the huge grin on the face of Pearl.
“It wasn’t that hard,” Pearl said. “My family and I are going to be able to stay and be your basketball coach for a long, long time. I’m grateful. I’m humbled. I’m blessed to be your coach, and War Eagle!”
Before this deal was made, there was serious speculation that the University of Louisville was actively pursuing Pearl. These rumors surfaced less than 24 hours after the Cardinals fired former Head Coach Chris Mack, but now, Pearl’s intent was clear: his home will be in Auburn for many years to come.
Before Pearl’s arrival, the 2013–14 Auburn team went 14-16, getting knocked out in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Since his hiring in 2014, Pearl now holds a total record of 157-93, a 113-39 record in the last five seasons, and, this year, has led his Tigers to an AP Poll #1 Ranking for the first time in school history.
The terms of Pearl’s new contract are yet to be released, but Auburn fans should feel comfortable knowing that their head coach is here to stay.
Stay tuned for more information regarding Pearl and his contract.
