AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Sophia Groth of the No. 7 Auburn gymnastics team was named Co-Freshman of the Week by the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday.
The freshman put together a string of career bests to push Auburn past the No. 15 Arkansas Razorbacks with a score of 197.250-197.200. Auburn’s 197.250 was the second-highest road score in Auburn history coming just .075 from tying the record.
Groth scored a 9.875 in vault and followed it up with a 9.85 on the floor, both of which were career highs.
In her first career appearance on the beam, Groth put together a 9.9 which was enough to boost the Tigers past Arkansas and complete the come from behind victory.
Following the match, Groth stated "I knew it was close going into beam, but I didn't waver I was very confident with my beam routine and how I've been training. There's no feeling like it. There was little room for error. Being able to build and get better with every routine was an amazing feeling. Knowing we were on the road, which makes it even more difficult, made it even sweeter."
Groth and the No. 7 Tigers will play host to the Iowa State Cyclones in their home opener on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m CT.
Iowa State has dropped their first two meets to Nebraska and Temple and will look to bounce back on the road.
The meet will be streamed on SEC Network+.
