Auburn Soccer Starts Spring Schedule With Win

AUBURN, ALABAMA (EETV)- The Auburn Tigers kicked off their spring schedule on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Kennesaw State. After last season's early postseason exit, the Tigers looked to build off of a strong start in order to prepare for the upcoming 2022 season.

Auburn looked strong in the first half. Creating multiple chances to score first. Auburn’s closest opportunity came from Carly Thatcher, whose shot was blocked by the Owls defense. Kennesaw State would have trouble challenging Prohaska’s goal, as the Tigers defense kept them at bay.

The Tigers would make some changes in the second half, including swapping goalies. Makenna Garcia would enter into the field for Prohaska.

The action started to pick up early in the second half with a shot from Olivia Candelino which rebounded off Kennesaw State’s goalie. Richards would get to the rebound, but it was blocked again by the Owls goalie. After a few more attempts at goal. The Tigers would break the deadlock. Anna Haddock scored in the 68th minute from a set-piece.

Auburn kept attacking the Owls' goal, leading to shots from Sammie Brown, Sydney Richards, and Olivia Candelino. Richards had an opportunity to score as her shot bounced off the keeper's hands and bounced right into Thatcher’s feet. Thatcher’s shot hit the post and the Owls got lucky once again.

The Tigers eventually found the back of the net again, this time freshman defender Jayice Silhan tapped the ball in from a corner kick, in the 86th minute to put the Tigers ahead by two. This was Silhan's first goal as a Tiger.

Towards the end of the game, Kennesaw State had their most clear opportunity to score. From a free-kick, the Owls player headed the ball, and Auburn goalie Garcia stretched her hand just enough to prevent the Owls from scoring.

Auburn soccer heads to Atlanta, Georgia to take on the Clemson Tigers on Feb. 26.
