AUBURN, ALABAMA (EETV)- No. 25 Auburn softball suffered their first loss of the season against No. 3 UCLA on Saturday. The Bruins took down Auburn 9-0 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Tigers record moves to 8-1.
Sophomore pitcher, Shelby Lowe, pitched in her third game in as many days. Lowe gave up a leadoff single before sitting down the next 10 batters until she faced trouble at the top of the fourth. The Bruins gathered three straight hits to plate a pair of runs.
Sophomore Maddie Penta worked out of the bases-loaded jam, but the Bruins were able to push across a third run in the inning.
In the top of the sixth, UCLA hit back-to-back-to-back homeruns to extend their lead. This led to a 9-0 victory in six innings for the third-ranked Bruins.
The Tigers are now 3-1 in games at the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational.
Penta was Auburn’s most effective reliver pitcher in the game as she tossed 1.2 innings of relief. Senior Samantha Yarbrough also tossed an inning of relief.
“This game is all about the next pitch,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “Whether you win or lose, there’s nothing you can do about pitches that you’ve already thrown. You make your adjustments, but there is nothing you can really do about it until the next pitch. We’ll come back tomorrow and take care of business.”
With their first loss behind them, the Tigers will return to Eddie C. Moore Complex on Sunday against USF at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN+ for their final game at the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational.
