AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) – Auburn sophomore guard Wendell Green Jr. was named SEC Player of the Week by the league office on Monday for the first time in his career.
Green Jr. averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game combined in two contests last week against Alabama and Georgia.
In both games, Green Jr. scored in double figures by halftime, and against UGA, he had 15 of his 19 points in the first half. His outstanding performance was capped off late in the 2nd half with a game winning layup in the final seconds to fend off the upset minded Georgia Bulldogs.
On Tuesday night against rival Alabama, Green Jr. recorded a season-high 23 points in what was the 12th 20-point game of his career, his second this season. He also tallied eight rebounds and six assists versus the Crimson Tide.
This was Auburn’s first season sweep of Alabama and Georgia since the 1966-67 season. Green Jr. has helped to carry his No. 1 ranked Tigers to a 22-1 record overall, winning 19 straight games, which is the best in the NCAA.
No. 1 Auburn travels to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 6:00 PM CST on ESPN2.
