Aubie Celebrates his 44th Birthday

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Yesterday was a special day on Auburn’s campus as Aubie the Tiger celebrated his 44th birthday.

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Yesterday was a special day on Auburn’s campus as Aubie the Tiger celebrated his 44th birthday.

Aubie has had a rich history throughout Auburn’s campus. On October 3, 1959, Aubie was first created as a cartoon character by Birmingham Post artist Phil Neel. Aubie appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football stadium.

The beloved tiger officially came to life in 1979 at a Southeastern Conference basketball tournament. The Student Government Association and the Alumni Association both came together to help design and bring the official Aubie costume to life.

Today, Aubie has become a staple for the Auburn community, appearing at all events from Tiger Walks to the rolling of Toomer’s Corner. Aubie even makes many appearances throughout the school year all over campus to brighten students’ days.

Even outside of the Auburn community, Aubie is well-known as an accomplished and beloved mascot. Aubie won the Capital One Mascot of the Year in 2014 and UCA Mascot National Champion nine times between 1991 and 2016, the most of any college mascot. Aubie was also the first college mascot to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006.

February 28 will always be a day to celebrate and recognize the Auburn community's favorite fascot.
