Auburn Cares Aims to Help Students on Campus

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn Cares is an umbrella program that offers many different resources for students here on campus.

Located on the first floor of the Melton Student Center, room 1206, is the support center for all Auburn students.

“Auburn Cares is a case-management office,” said Katherine Hettinger, director of the Auburn Cares office, “The majority of the work we do is reaching out to students who need support and helping them to connect with resources, but we also now run the campus food pantry, oversee the medical withdrawal process, and we also oversee Safe Harbor.”

Safe Harbor is Auburn's survivor support program, which is for faculty, staff, and students. This program supports anyone who has been impacted by interpersonal violence. They offer confidential and free support in a safe space.

Along with administering Safe Harbor, Auburn Cares also assists in the withdrawal process.

“Anybody in Auburn who’s enrolled in classes, if they were to withdraw for medical or mental health reasons, or because of a family situation, they would come through our office,” said Hettinger.

Students who feel as if they are struggling due to academic or personal reasons are able to reach out to the Auburn Cares staff to get individualized plans, assistance, gain support, get connected with resources, one on one follow ups, and more.

One event Auburn Cares hosts every year is the Student Memorial Ceremony, which honors students who have passed away over the last year.

This year, they will be honoring five students. “This event is an opportunity for everyone on campus, in the community, and their families to come together to celebrate their lives, and the impact they’ve had on ours,” said Hettinger.

The Student Memorial Ceremony will be held April 30th, at 5pm, in the Student Center ballroom.
