Auburn University Theatre kicks off its season with "Barbecue"

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - The Auburn University Department of Theatre & Dance has kicked off its 2023-24 season with “Barbecue” by Robert O’Hara, directed by Abdul-Khaliq Murtadha, Assistant Professor of Auburn University Department of Theatre & Dance.

This rowdy comedy is hilarious and displays a complex, dysfunctional family dynamic, while confusing and surprising you all at once. When all comes together, this play provokes a shift in perspective and will leave the audience questioning stories they have both heard and told.

This diverse cast features 11 Auburn students who have worked incredibly hard to bring this comedy to life at the Telfair B. Peet Mainstage Theatre.

Along with these on-stage talents, this show has bloomed from behind the scenes as well, which is evident with an artistic team, production team, and production crews. These teams are composed of devoted Auburn students and staff, and they have cultivated key aspects of the show such as costume and set designs.

Auburn University Theatre & Dance enters its 110th season with this production, with the season theme being “In a New Light.” According to the department’s website, the theme is  “inspired by the many shifting perspectives contained in our dramatic offerings.” This year’s theme strives to illuminate, inform, transform, and promote reflection through the cultivation of productions.

And with this jocular first production, the AU Theatre & Dance department is off to a thrilling start.

“Barbecue” will run from now until Oct. 8th. For more information, visit the show's website or the season’s website, both on the Auburn University Department of Theatre & Dance’s website.
