AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and Auburn University is doing its part to spread awareness and keep Auburn faculty and students safe from the dangers of being online.
Annually, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCSA) recognize October as a time to recognize the dangers that come with the never-ending rise of the internet. Additionally, NCSA strives to promote a safer, secure online experience by educating and promoting online safety.
According to the National Cybersecurity Alliance, “We advocate for the safe use of all technology and educate everyone on how best to protect ourselves, our families, and our organizations from cybercrime.”
This online resource for cybersecurity lays out several resources for internet safety, privacy, and education. Joining the effort, October is emphasized annually by Auburn University, as it promotes its own initiatives.
Auburn’s Information and Security office, as well as the Office of Information Technology (OIT), offer multiple ways for students and employees to educate themselves this month and beyond. Faculty and staff are required to meet annual training requirements and even have the chance to receive a grand prize for placing in the top five in “Phishing school” along with avid participation in all three cybersecurity initiatives.
OIT is no stranger to recognizing cybersecurity, with its own easily navigable Cybersecurity Center. This aspect of OIT’s website offers several reference links and security-related tools/ software that students can access and train with. These resources derive from both the NCSA and Auburn’s own McCrary Institute For Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security.
The McCrary Institute, from Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, works beyond cybersecurity, becoming a research-driven, trusted resource in national security, critical infrastructure, cyberspace policy, defense & intelligence, and even space technology.
