Public intoxication soars on Auburn's campus

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) -- Auburn University is facing increasing concerns over alcohol misuse on campus, as new data reveals a significant rise in public intoxication trends.

According to recent crime reports, public intoxication now accounts for almost 13% of on-campus crimes this semester, nearly doubling from the 7% figure from 2023.

“Alcohol lowers your inhibition. It does. One mistake, one bad decision can be harmful – it can. It can really be devastating to your life or to your career. However, it doesn’t have to be,” said Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety and Compliance Clarence Stewart.

While alcohol-related crimes have increased, some students like freshman Kiersten Wilson are aware of the risks involved.

“I think it can impact their grades [with] drinking, having fun, and then they’re not focused on their schoolwork. That can impact their college life and just their life in general,” said Wilson.

Other students share advice on how to stay safe for those who choose to drink legally and responsibly.

“Be with friends if you go drink, make sure you’re with groups. That goes for anyone really,” said sophomore Freedom Harper.

Several on-campus resources include contacting Auburn Police, who remain available 24/7, reaching out to student counseling or finding Auburn’s student security shuttle, which operates between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
