The Great Debate fosters civic engagement among students

AUBURN, AL. (EETV) - Auburn University held its annual Great Debate this Tuesday, two weeks before election day, in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. Representatives from the College Democrats and College Republicans organizations debated on the topics of public policy, foreign affairs and the economy.

“Civic engagement is the most important thing Americans have, and exercising that early as a college student… provides you with experience going into your political future as an older voter who might be engaged on issues,” said Ian Gunn, Vice President of the College Democrats.

The student-moderated debate featured allotted times to speak and offered rebuttals for students to reply to opponents. Gunn and Thomas Williams represented the College Democrats, while Luke Troutman and Madeline Baer represented the College Republicans. Around 70 students were in attendance.

“We had a full house here tonight, so we provided the opportunity for real students to provide live feedback. That’s what you’re asked to do: if you don’t like something, advocate for change,” said Troutman, President of the College Republicans.
