AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) – Auburn men’s tennis (4-2) dominated their first of two matches in their Sunday doubleheader. They defeated Tulsa in almost every facet at the Yarbrough Tennis Center to earn their fourth victory as a team on the season, 4-0.
The Tigers struck first in the doubles matches as Billy Blades and Will Nolan won the first match of the afternoon, knocking off Alex Okonkwo and Timothy Carlsson Seger for the Golden Hurricane, 6-3. After that, all Auburn needed to do was win one of the other two matches to put the first point on the board for the Tigers. Alex Frusina and Joey Phillips were able to do just that, beating Tulsa’s Luis Felipe Miguel and Gus Tettamble 6-4 to win the double's point.
Auburn had their way in most of the singles matches as well. Alex Frusina, who ranked in the top 100 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s most recent poll for singles players, was the first to win his best two out of three match. Frusina, the freshman, beat up on Luis Felipe Miguel of Tulsa 6-1 and 6-2 to win the match. Right behind him was redshirt sophomore Nicholas Heng who beat Calum Jestin of the Golden Hurricane 6-1, 6-3. The final nail in the coffin came from Joey Phillips, who took down Nikola Puntaric 7-5, 6-3 to secure the final point needed for the team win.
Auburn plays Alabama State Sunday night at 5 p.m. CST in the second match of their double header. After that they have one more non-conference match against Florida Gulf Coast before getting into the nuts and bolts of SEC conference play.
