Auburn women's golf finishes seventh at Moon Golf Invitational

Auburn women's golf was mid-leaderboard for all three days in a packed field this weekend during the Moon Golf Invitational, finishing seventh in the Sunshine State.

MELBOURNE, Fla. (EETV) – Auburn women’s golf continued their spring season down in Florida for the Moon Golf Invitational at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne. After a tough week against 14 of the top 50 teams in the country, the 21st ranked Tigers finished a mid-leaderboard seventh with a team score of 13 over par.

Round one was the Auburn ladies’ worst round of the three, shooting a combined team eight over. Balma Davalos Guaita, a freshman from Spain, was the best of the Tigers on day one, shooting a one under 71, which put her up at the top of the leaderboard for the first round. Katie Cranston and Anna Davis also had good rounds for Auburn. The junior Cranston carded a one over 73, while the star sophomore Anna Davis came in with a three over 75. This was good enough for seventh on the team leaderboard.

Round two was not much more successful for Auburn, but the knowledge of the course from the previous day showed through a little more. The Tigers had a team score of seven over. Anna Davis fully controlled her round, with only two holes straying from par, one in each direction as she brought in an even 72. Davalos Guaita and Cranston were the two right behind, with Cranston shooting just two over and Davalos Guaita carding only one over par. The second round put them into eighth place going into the final day of play.

The final round Tuesday was Auburn’s best of the invitational, shooting a team score of two under par and bringing them back up into seventh place for the tournament. A main reason for this was the performance of Katie Cranston, who came in with an outstanding four under 68. She birdied six holes and shot up the leaderboard 15 places into sixth place individually with an overall tournament score of one under. Anna Davis finished her weekend off with another even par 72, finishing the tournament three over individually. Balma Devalos Guaita finished her tournament one over par with her one over final round. The other Tiger ladies who contributed to the team performance were Casey Weidenfeld who carded 13 over for the event and Anne Fernandez who shot 14 over.

Individual performers for the Tigers included Carys Worby, who finished a tied 19th with Anna Davis at three over par as well as Rachel Gourley, who shot 18 over and finished 83rd individually in Melbourne.

Next up for Auburn women’s golf is the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina in just under two weeks from March 3rd to 5th. Play will be streamed live on the Golf Channel.
