The Auburn men’s tennis team defeated Alabama State 4-0 Sunday night behind great individual performances by Heng and Bredschneijder.
The Auburn Tigers looked to finish a great weekend 3-0 as they hosted Alabama State Sunday night. Auburn won a thriller against Middle Tennessee 4-3 before coming back to the Yarbrough Tennis Center Sunday and sweeping Tulsa 4-0 Sunday afternoon. Finally, Auburn completed their goal this weekend, sweeping Alabama State and completing the perfect weekend.
To start, the doubles games went back and forth early, with the Tigers having their only consistent success behind Billy Blades and Will Nolan. The Auburn duo won their first and only set in a gentleman's sweep, quickly going up 3-0 before relinquishing their only game of the set.
The other doubles matches were more struggles with neither team able to pull more than a game away in their matches. The score and momentum swings were almost perfectly similar for either team. It seemed like a formula every time, Auburn would get out to a small lead in each game before both Alabama St. duos would come roaring back and make it competitive.
The difference would come in the 11th games for both of the remaining doubles matches. Alabama State’s duo of Obrul and Mileusi never looked back, beating Heng and Kennedy the next game. It would be the same for other match but with the Auburn duo of Phillips and Frusina winning their set.
Auburn came out hot in singles play with five of their six players having early leads in the first set. The Tigers would have five players win their first singles sets, with Heng and Blaydes winning 6-1, Nasridinov and Bredschneijder winning theirs 6-2, and Alex Frusina finishing it out with a 6-3 set win.
The second sets would be a lot more competitive across the board but with great performances by Heng (6-1, 6-3), Blaydes (6-1, 6-3) and Bredschneijder (6-2, 6-3), the Tigers completed their perfect weekend and got to 5-2 on the season.
The Tigers will play next against Florida Gulf Coast in a 2-match series next weekend in Fort Myers, Florida.
