The No. 19 Auburn Tigers continued their impressive season kickoff with a 6-3 victory over Louisiana on Saturday at the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament. Auburn struck early and maintained its lead against multiple comeback attempts by the Ragin' Cajuns, securing its win.
The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating two runs in the first inning. Senior outfielder KK McCrary's single gained two runs for Auburn, but an aggressive baserunning attempt had her tagged out at second by a relay from Louisiana's defense. However, the early lead set the tone for Auburn's offensive approach!
Louisiana caught up in the third inning with graduate student Savannah White launching a single and later scoring with a sacrifice fly from senior Maddie Hayden. Mia Liscano, a sophomore infielder, followed with a single, tying the game at 2-2.
Nevertheless, Auburn quickly regained control in the bottom of the third. AnnaLea Adams, a freshman utility player, stepped up with a two-run single, bringing home two Tigers and putting Auburn back on top 4-2. The lead held until the fifth inning, when senior Ragin' Cajun Kayla Falterman's RBI single cut the deficit to 4-3, keeping Louisiana within striking distance.
Auburn's strength showed in the sixth inning, as Abbey Smith executed a well-timed steal on third and made her move during a throwing error by Louisiana, crossing home plate for another run. Moments later, Wohlers delivered a solo home run to center field, extending Auburn's lead to 6-3. To cap off the game, Auburn reliever SJ Geurin retired seven of the last eight batters she faced to secure the victory.
With the win, Auburn continues to showcase its efficiency on both sides of the ball. The Ragin' Cajuns will look to bounce back as they continue the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament, while Auburn eyes another statement performance in their next matchup against McNeese State.
