AUBURN, Ala (EETV)- After being swept by Texas, the No.11 Auburn Tigers returned to Plainsman Park and bounced back into the win column with a 1-0 shutout over No.21 Georgia Tech. The fans showed up in full force, setting a record midweek crowd of 5,559 at Plainsman Park.
Freshman Christian Chatterton took the mound to start the night, striking out four of the first five batters and secured two scoreless innings.
Auburn loaded the bases in the bottom of the second after three consecutive walks. Georgia Tech managed back-to-back strikeouts and nearly escaped the inning unscathed before Cooper McMurray earned the fourth walk of the inning, securing the game’s only run.
Despite walking two batters to open the third, Chatterton stayed dialed in, producing a double play and ending the frame with a strikeout. Auburn again loaded the bases after three straight hit-by-pitches but came up empty after a groundout ended the inning.
The players were not the only ones taking hits -- Georgia Tech nearly secured their first run in the fourth inning from a ground ball that bounced off the ground and struck the umpire, preventing the ball from reaching the outfield and allowing Auburn to make a play at first.
Senior John Armstrong was next on the mound, giving up only one hit and finishing with three strikeouts in two innings.
Carson Meyers entered in the seventh, needing only 17 pitches to strike out four and retire all six batters he faced.
Cam Tilly closed the game in the ninth, adding two more strikeouts to the stat sheet making it 15 total in the game.
As the regular season winds down, the Tigers face one of the toughest schedules in the nation, beginning with a three-game series against Mississippi St (24-16, 6-12 SEC) this weekend at Plainsman Park.
